State of the Society Address
Hello Members,
We’ve come to the one year anniversary of the new Brevard Authors Society, and I can say that it was successful considering the grinding and changes and adjustments we made. Our biggest accomplishments were:
– The successful registration as a non profit organization in the state of Florida. This giant and time consuming task must be credited to our President, Mrs. Foley, who spent months breaking through bureaucracy and their slow cooking computers to get us, Brevard Authors Society, finally registered and recognized as a not for profit corporation.
Thank you, Cindy.
– Our next accomplishment was the establishment of speaking forums by the Florida resident best-selling authors, among them James O. Born, Rachel Hauck, and others.
– Olive must be congratulated for organizing and putting together the very successful and popular first Book Festival at the Addison Village location. This accomplishment has opened the door for future participation in Addison Village literary events.
– The board jointly created the Fundamental Writing Course in nine weekly lectures, presented to the Addison Village writers, and attended by an average of 20 people. Each instructor delivered presentations in a profound manner. This is a popular subject, and it has been requested by other forums. It requires a lot of time and dedication, and we are blessed and grateful to have Mrs. Pollak, who takes the organizing responsibility and carries it to the end with her charming smile.
Thank you, Mrs. Pollak.
– At the Addison Village, during our March 7th meeting with the Lifestyle Director, Mrs. Barbara Ketchum, we agreed to organize and conduct the Children’s Book Festival on Saturday, June 7th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Village Club. Mrs. Ketchum has extended an invitation to the BAS for a partnership and cooperation in the creation of future art events, including music, painting, and theatrical performances. She also volunteered to help us create flyers and promo ads using Canva.
– There is also an opportunity to have our table during the Hurricane Prevention Expo at the Addison Village, for promotional purposes and solicitation of sponsors.
– Moon River Cafe is a unique opportunity, and the owner has expressed a defined desire to cooperate with Brevard Authors Society. She would like the Moon River Cafe to become the center of artistic society in and around Melbourne. We hope this location will create many opportunities for local artists. Both Olive and I were impressed with the locality and the potential for Moon River Cafe. Miss Broderick provided her vision and facilitation of various sections, such as the coffee shop, the meeting area, the writers’ corner, and the artist stage.
We had the pleasure to attend the presentation of an accomplished screenplay writer, Jeremy Wechter, who delivered an excellent speech on the subject of writing. I have high hopes for The Moon River Cafe.
– We thank our treasurer Jim R. Nelson, who takes time to manage our financial reports. Thank you, Jim.
– We are all very grateful and pleased to have the new member of the board, Mrs. Gina DiDesidero, accept the position of the VP of Brevard Authors Society, who has assumed the role of our webmaster.
– Finally, I am very pleased, and proud to have brought on board Dr. Sandra Roberts, who has accepted the role of the secretary, and who is sincerely committed as a volunteer to help with her vast experience and potentially open the new avenue of writers for our society.
I think you’ll have enough from me, and I hope you won’t complain, because it’s only the beginning.
Yours always, and sometimes,
Gene Luke
